UNFOLDING STRATEGIES JOINS RESPONSIBLE FASHION SERIES.

14.03.2023

Responsible Fashion Series PANEL “Digital fashion and cultural heritage” with Beata Wilczek, Jessie Fu and Yoonha Kim
Digital fashion so far posed itself as a new tool supporting marketing and business development. It can also support circular and sustainable development, yet its cultural sustainability implications remain unexamined. This panel aims at sharing different perspectives and practices among researchers and practitioners actively working with digital fashion in the context of cultural preservation. The speakers, Jessie Fu, Yoonha Kim, and Beata Wilczek, have experience in working with digital fashion in different capacities as researchers, strategists, and designers, providing a wide range of perspectives.

The Responsible Fashion Series originated as part of the Fashion Colloquia collection of events founded by four institutions: London College of Fashion, Parsons New School, New York, IFM, Paris and Domus, Milan. This new series reflects the need for fashion to take on a new mature and responsible approach for supporting the future of fashion. Attracting a rich variety of contributions from a broad selection of people – from academia, media and practice – and utilize contributions for uploading to a newly established international repository for fashion.
At each Responsible Fashion event, there is a mixture of specific themes of particular relevance to the specific location, and series themes, which allow different sets of contributions to be added and explored. In 2023 edition is titled “Travelling along the silk road in Central Asia” and takes place in Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan.

UNFOLDING STRATEGIES AND PARSONS PARIS PARTNER TO CREATE THE FIRST WEB3 BODY ATLAS.

7.03.2023

Parsons Paris MA Fashion Studies students took part in The Web3 Body Atlas project, in collaboration with Unfolding Strategies. Students were invited to create three of their own avatars from a range of digital platforms, including Decentraland, Meta, Idoru and Roblox. After creating their avatars, students evaluated the experience of each platform, based on five criteria. The first was customisation, that is, how easy it was to create and modify their desired avatar. The second was diversity, the extent to which students felt their body type was represented and achievable. The third related to wearability: the range of fashion and style choices available on the platform. The fourth was fluidity: the extent to which the user could shift between realistic and phantasy representations. And the final criterion related to the aesthetic appeal of the avatar itself.

The project gave students the chance to explore how the politics of intersectionality carry over into digital spaces, with avatars often exhibiting similar limitations and exclusions as those encountered in other forms of representation, such as fashion media, and in the embodied world. Some avatars, such as those on Ready Player Me, allowed for no customisation in terms of body silhouette – offering only highly normative or sexualised visions of the body, whilst others offered too much customizability, leaving the user overwhelmed with choice when it came to selecting and modifying facial features. The students’ avatars and findings will form part of the Web3 Body Atlas report which will be published later this year by Unfolding Strategies.

You can still contribute to our ongoing research on the body in web3. Contribute to the atlas and find out more about it here.
